Go Red for Women

We are pleased to announce that the American Heart Association is accepting applications for women who would like to participate in the 2017 Go Red For Women® BetterU Challenge — a challenge that could save your life.

Background: Research shows that most cardiac events can be prevented if women make small, yet life-saving choices for their hearts. Go Red For Women® is the American Heart Association’s national movement to make women aware of their risk for heart disease and provide inspiration to take action to reduce that risk.

Introducing the Go Red For Women® Challenge!  We will be selecting a group of women, over the age of 18, in Northeast Kansas, who may be profiled on our Web site, in the media and at the Go Red For Women Luncheon on December 12, 2017. Finalists are encouraged to adopt lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity and healthy eating. We hope that this will inspire other women to begin a heart healthy lifestyle change.

Women chosen to participate in the Go Red For Women® Challenge will take part in a 8-week program.  Participants will be provided with tools, resources and support needed to make healthy changes in their lives.

As part of the Go Red For Women® Challenge, the participants will receive:

    • Free wellness screenings before and after the challenge by Stormont Vail Health

    • A one hour massage from Backs By Popular Demand

    • Seven weekly educational sessions held on Thursday evenings from 6:00 -7:00 beginning October 19, 2017 and running through December 7, 2017

    • Free FAMILY GreatLife Golf & Fitness membership valid October 12, 2017 through March 31st, 2018

As a part of the Better U Challenge, we are looking for participants who will be able to make a commitment to this 8-week challenge.  Participants will be expected to attend the Better U Challenge Kick Off at GreatLife Golf & Fitness on October 12, 2017 as well as the Go Red for Women Luncheon at the Capitol Plaza Hotel on December 12, 2017 (your ticket will be provided) where you will be introduced as a BetterU participant.

In addition, you will be expected to complete the preliminary and final heart risk assessment at Stormont Vail Health.  You will have weekly social media and texting accountability which includes a minimum of one weekly post to social media page (BetterU Facebook page) as well as participating in a weekly group text (Group Me app) that includes leaders and all the participants.  Lastly, you will be asked to participate in at least 6 of the weekly educational sessions.  The American Heart Association's Heart Walk at Washburn University on October 14 can count as one of the required sessions.

We are looking for a diverse group of individuals with respect to age, lifestyle, marital status, ethnicity, and physical health. You do not have to be a model or a particular body type; it is more important to us that we have a group of positive thinkers. Most importantly we are looking for people who are ready to make a positive change to their health.
